ESTRO holds 11th Biennial on Physics and Radiation Technology for Clinical Radiotherapy
8-12th May 2011.
Taking place in London, the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology’s Anniversary Congress will mark three decades of innovation and cancer care.
The programme fosters the ESTRO aim of bringing together specialists from different disciplines to create a strong and successful team of all those involved in patient care. The conference is dedicated to physicists and RTTs but it attracting more and more clinicians.
The 11th Biennial scientific programme will focus on emerging topics such as: Advanced imaging for radiotherapy, Dose painting based on functional imaging, QA of imaging, risk management, practical technologies, IMRT planning, patient environment and so on. There will be a young scientists programme, sessions on the professional mobility of medical physicists and the role of the various different national societies and federations. The programme includes symposia, proffered papers, poster display and poster sessions. A large emphasis on Education will also be set with pre-meeting courses and teaching lectures scheduled every morning.
Chairperson of the conference, Julian Malicki, stated “this scientific programme will provide an opportunity to present and discuss new achievements in radiotherapy physics and technology whilst also offering a package of high level educational lectures”. He went on to highlight the need for some degree of unification and accreditation in medical physics and radiation technology, to be equally recognised worldwide. In order to celebrate 30 years, the ESTRO Anniversary Congress will bring together both the GEC-ESTRO-ISIORT Europe Conference and International Oncology Forum, alongside the 11th Biennial. All delegates are free to visit all rooms, listen to presentations from all three conferences and participate in discussions. The new International Oncology Forum is unique in that it will review 30 years of radiation oncology in thirty hours and provide a broad perspective on future research projects that will translate into new and better clinical options for patients. The GEC-ESTRO-ISIORT Europe Conference will facilitate multi-disciplinary discussions involving all those interested in advancing the treatment of cancer with brachytherapy.
According to Jean Bourhis, President of ESTRO, the Anniversary Congress is special because “Radiation oncology is not made up of compartmented disciplines. Professions are linked and need to exchange ideas and working practices. This is why we thought that the anniversary could be a platform where everyone meets – where all radiation oncology disciplines can merge.”
